About Samantha Olschan

Samantha Olschan is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist & educator who works across animation, art, and design for brands, films, media, and experiences.

Her work explores the dialogue between image, typography, and culture to communicate complex narratives. Utilizing a blend of fine art and design, she  establishes points tension, challenging conventional views and enriching the discourse on awareness, compassion, and visual communication. The work investigates how these elements influence perception and response, using aesthetic approaches to engage deeply with their narratives. Through manipulating time, movement, color, photographic elements, and typographic forms, she creates layered meanings that reflect the experiences of marginalized groups and is dedicated to building empathy and  amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities.

Recent exhibitions and screenings include the P.O.V. Series (PBS), The ShortList (PBS),  The Connecticut Art Directors Club, Tag Gallery Los Angeles, Las Laguna Gallery, Gallery Omnibus, Hollywood North Film Awards, The William Benton Museum of Art, The Peninsula School of Art,  Black Maria Film & Video Festival, New Haven International Film Festival, The Seattle International Film Festival, Boston Cinema Census, Boston Underground Film Festival, FrackFest, Visionfest, Tribeca Cinemas, Bumbershoot, The Gene Siskel Film Center, Marblehead Film Festival, The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Greece,  and Womenwhodraw.com.

Artist Statement

$n@¢K/t!m£ is a series of images exploring consent, consumer culture, entitlement, and women’s rights. The images in the series draw from social media, art history, and digital culture by combining classical sculpture, tech iconography, digital and/or manufactured analog glitches, with crowdsourced conversations from dating apps and direct messages (DM).

Created manually through digital collage, and imagined as alter egos in response to the rise of NFTs, AI image generators, and generative AI tools, the series is an embodiment of our automations, internet behaviors, and digital hoarding. It is deeply influenced by how the body and gender have been historically exchanged and displayed in traditional fine art, popular culture and the internet. The title references "leetspeak" as a communication system that evolved to circumvent filters that would otherwise flag content as inappropriate, or blocked. The slang expression “snack” is a gender inclusive description used for someone who is considered good enough to eat. The selected sculptural figures, glitch overlays, and DM subtexts invite us to concentrate on who, and how, we interact with and define beautiful objects. The work also gives emotion and agency to eternally silent figures through color, shape, and type. The artwork referenced within each piece questions our collective behaviors, selective memories, reforming relationships with narratives that have informed centuries of visual culture and gender roles.
